This repeats the pages you choose inside the document. Copies are references to the same underlying content, so duplicating a page ten times costs far less than ten times the file size.

The common cases are printing: several copies of a single-page form on one print run, a registration sheet that needs one per attendee, or padding a document out to a multiple of four so it can be folded into a booklet.

The two placements are the same distinction a printer dialog makes between collated and uncollated output, and picking the wrong one is annoying rather than harmful. Collated gives 1, 1, 1, 2, 3 - three copies of page one, in place. Appended gives 1, 2, 3, 1, 1 - the original document followed by the extra copies. For printing separate handouts, appended is usually right; for a form that repeats within a document, collated is.

Duplication is cheap because PDF pages can share the objects they draw. Ten copies of a page with a large embedded photograph add ten page entries, not ten photographs, so the file grows by a few kilobytes rather than several megabytes.

This is also the tool for padding a booklet. Saddle-stitched booklets need a page count that is a multiple of four; if yours is not, Insert blank pages is usually the better fit, but duplicating a cover or a notes page works too when you want something on the extra sheets.

Bookmarks point at the first occurrence of a duplicated page, since a bookmark can only lead to one place.
